Where we are

The Sweetwater Lakes are located at the entrance to the Aupouri Peninsula, close to Ninety Mile Beach, in the Far North of New Zealand. The nearest large town is Kaitaia.

There is direct road access to Lake Ngatu from West Coast Road and Sweetwater Road. Heading north from Kaitaia by State Highway 1, turn left after 13 km on to West Coast Road which is signposted to Waipapakauri and Ninety Mile Beach.

Sweetwater Lakes Walkway

This path which goes around Lake Ngatu and down to Sandhills Road via Lake Heather and Lake Rotoroa is run by The Bushland Trust as a local environmental initiative. The walk is approximately 10 km in length and takes approx. 2 hours to walk.
